Shelby History
Ford Motor Company has a classic on it's hands with the 1964 Ford Mustang. But the Ford Mustang had one complaint, The Chevy Corvette seemed to be a little better bang Horsepower wise for the buck. The 64 1/2 Mustang was a fairly limited production run of the Mustang. In 1965 Ford listened to the consumers and decided to enlist the services of Carroll Shelby who at the time was building and racing his very own Cobras, to see if he could beef up the Mustang and make it more desireable than the Corvette.
Ford Motors told Shelby that they would make a stripped down version of the 64 mustang in the upcoming year and that he could have run of the mill to see what he could do to make it more of a monster. And that is exactly what Shelby did.
Shelby had several businesses going on at his facilities in Venice, California. He ran his very own GoodYear Racing Tire business, built his Cobras and Race teams. But by the end of 1965 with the success of the Cobra 427, the Ford GT and the Shelby 350 GT he would be forced to move his facility to a larger locale.
He would receive the Ford Mustangs from Ford Motor Co with no back seats and no hoods. The backseat area where the seats would have been in a regular mustang, was replaced with a place for the spare tire. The suspension was completely reworked with a 1" sway bar, Front stabilizer bar that was larger than it's stock counterpart and included adjustable shocks by Koni.
All of the Mustang Emblems save 1 was removed from the exterior ( located on the drivers side grill ). In place of the Metal hood the Shelby GT 350 was setup with a fiberglass hood with functional hood scoops. Although this was short lived due to people complaining about the poor durability and design of the fiberglass used and it reverted back to Metal in 1966.
The stock horsepower on the 65 Mustang was 271 horsepower and with the addition of an Aluminum Intake shelby added it was raised to 306. Also a Borg Warner T-10- 4 speed transmission was added and competition seat belts instead of the factory stock ones.
And the rest ... as the popular expression goes ... is history!
Out of all the Shelby Mustangs built in 1965 the majority were bought by car enthusiasts.
